The most recent statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau show that 45.7 million people, or about 15 percent of the population, were uninsured in 2007. In Virginia, that number was 1 million, or 14.2 percent. An updated report on the uninsured in 2008 is scheduled to be released Thursday. Among the uninsured in the United States in 2007, though, 9.7 million are noncitizens, about half of whom are here illegally. The proposed plans don't cover illegal immigrants.
